Where to start when setting up a fashion blog

Starting a Fashion Blog

So, you’ve decided that you want to become a fashion blogger. Starting a fashion blog is a lot of work and becoming successful requires a lot of knowledge not only about fashion and beauty but also about blogging and internet marketing. So let’s start with the basics.

Choosing a name

Choosing a name for your new fashion blog is one of the most important steps you take in starting your blog. There are a lot of things you should think about when choosing a name:

  • Does it sound like a blog that people would want to read?
  • Will I still like this name in two years?
  • Is the name right for the content that I plan on posting?
  • Is the domain name still available?
  • Is this name not already taken on successful social media channels?

Securing a domain name

The next step is claiming a domain name for your fashion blog. There are a lot of different companies where you can registrate your domain name. I recommend Hostgator. I’ve had a pleasant experience with them in the past and I can offer you a $9,94 discount if you sign up with the following coupon code ‘TheBeautyIssue‘!

Choosing a blogging platform

There are a lot of different blogging platforms and they all have their pluses and minuses. Blogger, Tumblr and WordPress are the best ones.

Blogger

Blogger is best suited for bloggers who seek a platform where they can start becoming familiar with the blogging as a hobby, while still maintaining simple customization options within their blog.

Tumblr

Tumblr gives you the ability to download a variety of free or premium themes for your site, after that you can just start writing posts. The big advantage that Tumblr has over Blogger and WordPress is that Tumblr gives other Tumblr users the ability to find your posts by hashtags and follow / reshare / like your posts when they find it. It’s a lot easier to get your first visitors through Tumblr.

Tumblr is best suited for people who want to focus their blog around images and short content such as quotes and for people who don’t care for a lot of customization options.

WordPress

In my opinion WordPress is the best platform out of the three if you’re planning on making your blog a business rather than a hobby. Nearly 20% of websites on the internet are built on top of WordPress and because of that there are tons of WordPress tutorials available for you to learn all the ins- and outs of this incredible platform.

Choosing a design for your fashion blog

Designs are a very personal thing. One person may be in love with a web design, while someone else thinks it’s horrible. Therefore it’s very important that you make sure that you really do love your design, it should express your message, your vision and your style.
There are tons of themes available for all the major blogging platforms. For example, Themeforest offers tons of themes for any type of website or blog.

Creating your first content

Before you start writing your first posts it’s important to set up the basics. Every fashion blog needs at least a contact page and an ‘about you’ page.
For inspiration you can take a look at mine!

Now take a minute and think about the kind of content you are going to write. Try to divide them into separate categories. It’s important to do this good from the beginning so people will find you through Google. For my blog I’ve set up the following categories:

I really hope that this post will help you on your way with starting a fashion blog. If you have any more tips or questions for starting your own blog, let me know in the comments below!

  1. Great post! I wish I had taken more time choosing a name for my blog in the beginning. Years later still the same name. Lol. I also have a tumblr and have no clue really how to use it(eek) so I stick to wordpress and use tumblr for the funny posts you always see on Pinterest etc. all three platforms are good, but getting that Domain is so very important.
